You only have to contact the Porlock Visitor Centre to realise that its claim to be unsurpassed as the friendliest and most helpful Visitor Centre in the South West is no idle boast.
Exmoor accommodation can easily be found when using this website in conjunction with the FREE booking service offered by the Porlock Visitor Centre. Accommodation can be found to suit your individual needs and is only a phone call or an email away, avoiding the necessity of several phone calls or emails to find what you want. Porlock is a great place to stay and from which to explore Exmoor whether you choose to walk on the moor, ride a bike or a horse, or go by car. Whatever activity you select you can be sure that our friendly staff will be able to help you, as they do not just resolve your Exmoor Accommodation problems, but have a wide selection of maps, guides and general information to which they can add their own individual store of local knowledge. In fact a visit to the centre can often be a memorable experience in itself.
Not only will you find out about Porlock and the Vale of Porlock but information concerning the whole of Exmoor, its history, geology and archaeology, much of which is to be found in the publications of The Exmoor National Park Authority and the National Trust. You will even find there some of the bones of an aurochs that were uncovered by the sea a few years ago in the remains of the prehistoric forest off Porlock Weir.
As the Centre is also a Council Information Point there is a fount of knowledge available for our Visitors. Indeed the Porlock Visitor Centre is unique on Exmoor as it really is so much more than just a Visitor Centre and has become the hub of village life – constantly changing and evolving and often replacing the village shop as the centre of local gossip and knowledge. So if we do not know the answer to a question we usually “know a man who does”! As an added bonus the Visitor Centre is the final port of call on the Coleridge Way Walk and you have the opportunity to sign the book there and receive your Certificate to mark your achievement in finishing it! If you wish to relax after your efforts there is the Coleridge Memorial Garden behind the Centre.
The Visitor Centre is renowned for the friendly welcome that greets you whether you just want to browse through the publications and local Exmoor produce on display or if you need some assistance with some local Exmoor Accommodation.
Run by the Porlock Tourist Association, all purchases made and accommodation found for you in the centre help to keep it functioning for the benefit of all.
Maps, books and quality local crafts are also on sale. Profit from these sales helps to finance the centre.
Whatever your needs, we hope that the Centre will help make your visit to Exmoor a memorable one.
