This stroll will introduce you to the fern species found at Horner Woods. You will learn a method for identification and be shown key features of the species encountered. You will also find out about some of the other interesting plants and lichens special to this habitat. The walk is being led by Plantlife as part of the Building Resilience in S W Woodlands project. This walk will follow the South West Coast Path from Ashley Combe to Culbone Church and back, looking at the surviving features of the Ada Lovelace era designed landscape and the work to help restore some of its features. ‘An eye for spring’ guided walk in Dunkery and Horner Wood. Celebrate the height of spring on a guided walk through an ancient woodland and National Nature Reserve. Ranger Paul will guide you through this reasonably challenging walk, helping you spot rare plants and listen out for cuckoos and migrating birds. See if you can spot ‘The General’, an ancient oak and one of the oldest trees on Holnicote. The walk winds through ancient woodland and you’ll get panoramic views across the Horner Valley and Porlock Vale towards picturesque Selworthy.

In Byron’s Wake: the turbulent times of his wife and his daughter Ada Lovelace.‘In Byron’s Wake’ considers Ada Lovelace of Ashley Combe, Porlock (now recognised for her work alongside Charles Babdage as a pioneer of computing), as ‘brilliant, ebullient, eccentric, vivacious, egocentric and oddly dressed, who had her mother’s discipline and her father’s volatility’.

There is more information on the website and the Exmoor Society will be leading a walk from the Porlock Weir Car Park on the following day. The walk will go to Ashley Combe and then onto Culbone church.

An afternoon concert entitled English Country Garden, will be performed by Grace Notes - an a cappella group for ten upper voices, directed by Daphne West. A fun, apple themed event, with something for all ages.
A look back to old country crafts... centred around our 1862 'Somerset Pattern' apple press which will be in action pressing many tons of apples into fresh juice for you to taste and take away.

Old rural crafts such as wool spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, basket weaving, woodland crafts etc, also demonstrated.

Loads of home made appley cakes, pies, jams, chutneys, a fantastic hog-roast, appley soups, tea & coffee means you don't even need to bring a packed lunch.

Add to this some hearty singing of a cider song (you can join in too!), Birds of prey, vintage engines and machinery in action... plus much more... means a brilliant day out for all the family. The best bit..... IT'S FREE!

Join the adventure! Come and explore the natural world through the afternoon with family games and activities. Stay through the evening with onsite catering (pay as you go) to Experience Exmoor as it gets dark. Sit around a campfire whilst you eat your dinner before going on a short night walk learning about Exmoor's nocturnal wildlife. Dogs welcome

Shops in Porlock will be throwing open their doors to welcome customers for nibbles and the odd tipple as they browse for those all important Christmas presents. There will also be street entertainment, Santa in his sleigh, carol singing, dancing as well as stalls and street food.
