SOMERSET ‘BIOART’ EXHIBITION
WHAT MIGHT IT MEAN TO HAVE A WORLD POWERED BY BIOLOGY, ASKS SOMERSET ‘BIOART’ EXHIBITION
Open throughout Somerset Art Weeks 10am – 3pm, Thursday – Sunday, at Singer Instruments’ The Lab, Minehead, TA24 5AE.
Head to Singer Instruments’ Minehead robotics lab this Somerset Art Weeks (21st September – 6th October 2024) and enjoy a free exhibition of Bioart, courtesy of talented local artist Zoe Snape. The event is supported by Somerset Art Works with funding from Arts Council England
Zoe has been resident at Singer Instruments throughout the summer and her latest artworks are uniquely created from colourful bacteria, yeast and fungi grown in lab dishes, not drawn, printed or painted like her previous works.
The company specialises in designing and manufacturing robots for biologists working to make the world a cleaner, greener, healthier place. This first of its kind exhibition is a chance to tour the lab to learn about Bioart and be inspired by the potential of a world powered by biology.
Dr Harry Singer, third generation CEO of Singer Instruments, said: “The world we live in is inherently powered by fossil fuels. But by ‘engineering biology’ – with a little help from Singer Instruments’ cutting-edge microbiology robots – scientists are finding ways to harness nature and replace these polluting industries with more sustainable biological ones.
“This exhibition is about using Bioart to welcome people into conversations about science and nature, and above all raise the profile of exciting STEM careers for people locally.”
Working within the festival theme of “Flux and Flow”, Zoe’s new artworks draw on her special relationship with the local landscape and how our human response to climate change might change how we view our natural world.
Complementary to this new work, Zoe has curated a group exhibition by artists and scientists exploring Bio Art, such as Finnish artist Johanna Rotko and Brazilian Lab, Microbioworld. Artworks are available for purchase.
