An Exmoor small business has won another Gold award, at the Best B&B of the South West Tourism Excellence awards last night in Exeter, having won the preliminary round of Best B&B in the Bristol Bath Somerset Tourism awards in November.

Bossington Hall, located on the outskirts of Porlock Village, won the award last night in the Visit England tourism awards ceremony held at the Exeter University, putting them as the best B&B in the whole of the South West (including Dorset, Devon and Cornwall), and representing the area in the National Visit England awards. Bossington Hall is family run small business which started in response to the pandemic, and has been winning awards for its breakfast (Taste of the West Gold two years running). They pride themselves on being a friendly, homely atmosphere. Guy, the owner, says “it’s amazing how often people comment on the warmth and cozy feeling they get whilst staying here” All the local staff at the B&B pride themselves on doing everything possible to help guests enjoy their stay and love to share their local knowledge so that visitors can make the most of their time in the area.

Bossington Hall, in Porlock, Exmoor, was built by Allan Hughes, who was a shipping CEO in 1911, and was extended in 1923. Finally sold from their family to a developer in 1983, it was turned into self catering flats. Guy bought it in 2016, and converted it back to one big house, and has been providing a warm welcome to guests since 2016 as self catering, and B&B since only 2021.

The Hall is a Grade II listed building and sports a listed Squash court, a hard tennis court, and 8 acres of informal gardens surrounding the house. The views are breathtaking and panoramic from the headlands of Lynmouth to Dunkery beacon (the highest point in Exmoor and Somerset)

Taking up the main east and west wings, and the first floor of the north wing, the family-run B&B offers nine rooms, which include six en-suite rooms and all are individually designed with their own character.

The breakfast features a variety of great local produce, such as Little Oak Farm’s pork (who supply James Martin) and can be enjoyed by guests in the beautiful ‘big room’ with towering oak mullioned windows.

Despite the age of the building, technology abounds, with the lawns being mown by three robotic mowers, the corridors being vacuumed by robotic vacuums, the internet comes from Space (Starlink), and even the driveway has detectors to forewarn the staff of approaching guests so they can greet them on arrival.

Guy and Annie’s attention to detail is just staggering, with felt pads on the breakfast room chair feet to prevent noise, menus in many languages (from Welsh to Russian), PIR operated driveway lighting, binoculars in the windows, and local guide maps in the hallway beside the torches, umbrellas and walking sticks.
